Superior Tiny Antique Manipuri Singing Bowl – A4 with Suns & Ritual Gashes

Antique Manipuri Singing Bowls have become increasingly rare in recent years.  Very small bowls of any type are very collectable, and this tiny one is a particularly interesting example featuring suns and ritual gashes. 

This is a superior quality bowl with lots of artwork.  There are two circles of suns (dots surrounded by circles) at its centre, and another all around the rim.  More suns encircle the outer wall, along with a series of ritual gashes which are thought to have been made as part of the bowl’s initiation rite.  The lower wall features a decorative band of vertical lines.   All these decorative elements only appear on superior quality older bowls.

This bowl needs to be struck and played with a wooden ringer.  The fundamental note is the same middle octave A4 (439Hz) when struck or played.  It is very responsive and easy to play.

It is in excellent structural condition.
