This is a fabulous and intricately detailed watercolor painting by the renowned Balinese artist I Made Nyana, a post war and contemporary artist from Batuan whose works have been offered at auction multiple times, with early examples fetching higher prices. I purchased this painting in Bali for my own collection sometime in the 1990s.
The central figure depicts the Hindu Goddess Saraswati, Goddess of arts and music, with her vehicle (a swan). A forest scene is overlooked (centre top) by Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa who is the supreme god in Balinese Hinduism, and considered the source of all life and the creator of the universe.
He is accompanied by three other deities…all administering blessings to villagers and forrest creatures. The painting features a meandering forest river with two God Seats and, in addition to the Gods, includes 5 people, 7 deer, 5 monkeys, 8 squirrels, and countless birds, butterflies, and forrest creatures.
The painting measures 14 ½ x 10 inches (37 x 15.5 cm) and is in perfect condition. Both the painting and its border are signed by the artist.
