UNIQUE PAIR OF LARGE ULTRA-LOW 2nd OCTAVE ANTIQUE LINGAM SINGING BOWLS
Weights: 853 and 987 grams. Sizes: 20 x 10.5cm and 19.5 x 9.5cm
This is an extraordinary pair of large ultra-low 2nd octave antique Lingam Singing Bowls circa 1800. To say that they are rare would be an understatement…they are simply unique!
Low second octave bowls are extremely uncommon, and generally only found in the largest of antique Jambati or Ultabati bowls, never in Lingams. Second octave bowls are highly regarded and sought-after for their powerful vibrant energy and low resonant voices.
Antique Lingam bowls have distinctive physical and sonic qualities, and are used in sacred and ritual ceremonies. They are so rare that most singing bowl collectors and practitioners will never have encountered or handled a single bowl. The unlikely combination of type, size, and low octave makes these two singing bowls utterly unique!
Bowl 1: Low second octave Bb2 fundamental note (117Hz) that is virtually perfect pitch when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The note changes to a middle octave E4 (328Hz) with a wooden ringer. This large high-sided lingam has extremely fine walls and a sheered lip. There is an excellent pointed lingam surrounded by circles at its centre, and a matching navel or yoni underneath. It has a golden bronze colour and an attractive hammered surface with an aged well-used appearance. The structural condition is excellent and it is free of stains and blemishes. Weight 853 grams (1 lb 14 oz). Size 20 x 10.5 cm (8 x 4 inches).
Bowl 2: Low second octave B2 fundamental note (126Hz) that flickers to C3 (128Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. This is because the note is situated midway between B2 and C3. It changes to a middle octave F4 (353Hz) with a wooden ringer. This large lingam has extremely fine gently curved walls and a sheered lip. Evidence of ceremonial or ritual gashes encircling the outer rim add to its interest. There is an excellent pointed lingam surrounded by circles at its centre, and a matching navel or yoni underneath. It has a golden bronze colour and an attractive well-used surface appearance. The structural condition is excellent and it is free of stains and blemishes. Weight 987 grams (2 lb 2 ¾ oz). Size 19.5 x 9.5 cm (7 ½ x 3 ¾ inches).
The price includes 2 Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushions, 2 large suede ringers, 2 double-ended teak and suede ringers, and a padded striker.
