Vintage Balinese Ganesha Wood Carving
Weight: 3 kilos (6 lb 10 oz). Size H28 x W24 x D21.5 cm (11 x 9 ½ x 8 ½ inches)
Purchased from a vintage collection in Bali in the 1980s this wonderful wood carving of a seated Ganesha (or Ganesh) has been displayed in my home for around 40 years. It was probably originally commissioned for display and sale in an upmarket Balinese art gallery in the 60s or 70s.
Lord Ganesh is the popular Hindu Elephant God of Good Fortune and New Beginnings. This carving portrays him as a meditator/healer and scholar, with a string of mala beads in his right hand and a sacred lontar book in the other. He is wearing a classical Balinese ceremonial crown and costume.
It has been expertly and intricately carved in Indonesian Suar hardwood by a master carver. It has a lovely grain, and is in exceptional condition. The eyes are ebony.
A charming, happy, and positive addition to any home!
