Antique Bronze Ritual Handheld Bell – Eb7 (2433Hz)

Size: 8 ½ x 3 inches (21.5 x 7.5 cm). Weight: 1 lb 1 ½ oz (497 grams)

This is an interesting antique bronze handheld bell or ghanta that was formerly used by a priest on ritual and ceremonial occasions. The top features a winged praying Garuda protected by a cobra. The Garuda indicates that this bell belonged to, or was used by, a worshiper of the Hindu God Vishnu.

This rare antique handbell is an exceptionally fine specimen and in good condition. Its considerable age and long usage is reflected in the smoothness of the Garuda’s features having been worn down with handling and ringing. It is hard to imagine the number of times this bell has been rung in order for the hard bronze to be worn down like this. Nevertheless the form of the Garuda and Cobra remain well defined, as is the decorative banding on the bell itself.

This is a unique one-off item that has been cast in bronze by the lost wax method. The rung note is a seventh octave Eb (2433Hz).
