Antique Naga Singing and Healing Bowl. D/E & G Notes (Solar Plexus & Throat Chakras)
Weight 1 lb 14 ¾ oz (871g). 17 x 10.5cm (approx.6 ¾ x 4 ½ inches)
This is a large and good quality antique pedestal or Naga Singing Bowl that is sound in body and soul but a little grubby in appearance from years of use and service. It has a strong pedestal, smooth even walls, a grooved lip and a decorative band of engraved lines forming a collar just below the rim. It’s a fairly typical example of a Naga bowl.
However, its multiple harmonics are anything but typical. This is a bowl that sings a different note every time you strike or play it…and I found it extremely hard to assign any one note as its fundamental harmonic. It seems almost to have a mind of its own!
If the bowl is struck squarely in the middle of the belly the primary note is a mid octave D and if it is struck near the rim it’s a mid octave E flat…and sometimes it sings both notes together. Play it around the rim with a suede ringer and it’s a good D4 but play it with a wooden one and it sings a powerful and piecing fifth octave G. This old bowl may not be the prettiest but it’s certainly interesting and versatile!
