Unusual Antique Singing Bowl. Eb4 Multi-Harmonic (Solar Plexus Chakra)
Weight 1 lb 8 ¾ oz. (703g). 17 x 8.5 cm (approx. 6 ¾ x 3 ¼ inches)
This unusual antique Tibetan singing bowl has a flat bottom and strong walls that taper towards the rim. It has a nice level lip, and there are several well-defined decorative lines forming a collar just below the outer rim, and several small concentric circles at the centre of the bowl. The general condition of this old bowl is very good.
Apart from its unusual form this bowl is notable for its multi-harmonic voices and talking ability. The fundamental note is a mid octave Eb when the bowl is struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. However, if a hard striker is used (such as the side of a suede-wrapped ringer) the struck changes to a D4 that is virtually concert pitch. The rim note remains an Eb4 sometimes accompanied by an Eb2 harmonic if a wooden ringer is used. A little experimentation with playing technique will also produce a nice fifth octave A note.
This bowl has a very good talking voice if it is struck and rocked with water inside, but you will need to experiment with different amounts of water. It is also capable of producing small fountains when played around the rim. A double-ended teak and suede ringer is included in the price.
A really versatile and interesting antique bowl!
