Balinese 3-Face Leyak Carving
48 x 23 cm (19 x 9.5 inches)
A free-standing tthree-face carving of a Balinese Leyak (spook, ghost or witch) referencing the many-headed mythological water serpent Hydra that grew two heads for each that was cut off.
It was carved in suar wood (rain tree), from a piece of hollowed-out tree trunk, by the highly-regarded Balinese artist Wayan Asin, who for years has specialized in carving leyaks, spooks and other shamanic subjects. Very few Balinese would dare to work with Leyak imagery.
The carving is in perfect condition. A really interesting piece that looks great when lit from behind.
We were keen to support the work of this artist and this carving is one of several we purchased from him between 1993 and 2005.
