Enormous 11½ inch Antique Ceremonial Lingam Bowl – Fabulous F#3 (187Hz)

This enormous, rare and beautiful antique ceremonial Lingam bowl probably dates from the 17^th or 18^th century and is one of the largest I have seen in almost 30 years of collecting. 

It is certainly the largest and heaviest in our collection at 11½ inches in diameter and weighing 2.43 kilos (5 lb 5¾ oz).   This would be a large bowl by any standard, even for a Jambati or Ultabati, but for a Lingam it’s almost unheard of!

The quality of this ancient bowl is quite exceptional.  It has a lovely shape, with evenly forged walls, a wide grooved triangulated lip, a large pointed lingam at its centre and a superb deep navel underneath.  Two decorative lines encircle the bowl just below the outer rim, but these have been worn down with the passage of time and are now barely visible in places.  This bowl is so smooth to the touch, inside and out, that it’s hard to imagine that it was originally hammered into shape, and that the surface has been worn smooth through years of handling and use.   This fabulous bowl has been well cared for throughout its lifetime, and is structurally sound and in excellent clean condition for its age.  It has a lovely deep golden colour.

As one might expect of a ceremonial bowl, this exceptional Lingam has a glorious singing voice…a truly beautiful third octave F# with a frequency of 187Hz. It has a particularly powerful pulse or beat.  Whether stuck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer…this bowl’s voice is stunning!

A beautiful Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a large padded striker and a suede-wrapped ringer are all included in the price.
