Weight 2.01 kilos (4 lb 9 oz). Size 28 x 14 cm (11 x 5 ¼ x 5 ½ inches)
Antique Ultabati bowls are now extremely rare and difficult to source, even more so for large examples. This particular bowl is exceptional in every respect…age, size, shape, quality, condition and musicality. It ranks among the very best Ultabati bowls I have encountered in over 45 years.
The fundamental note is a beautiful low and almost perfect second octave A2 (112Hz) when stuck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. It is on the cusp between A2 (112Hz) and Bb2 (114Hz) and the note subtly flickers between the two, with the A2 slightly dominant. The rim note changes to a middle E4 (324Hz) when played with a wooden ringer. It has a fabulous long pulsating sustain.
This is a very versatile bowl. Its vibrant energy makes it capable of producing splashy fountains when played around the rim with water inside, and it is also capable of producing the sacred OM sound if played lightly with a heavy suede ringer.
This Ultabati has a gracefully curved wall, a typical downward-sloping rim, and a rounded bottom. The outer wall has a fabulous faintly mottled matt brown color while the interior is a smooth and shiny golden bronze. A pair of fine lines define the boundary between the rim and the shoulder, and there are circles at its centre.
This bowl is thought to date from the 19th century. It is in exceptional condition, clean and stain-free.
A perfect and large example of this rare and sought-after bowl type…aesthetically very beautiful with a stunning voice to match!
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a padded striker, and a ringer are all included in the price.
