Extremely Rare & Versatile Antique Lingam Singing Bowl – Singing, Talking & Fountain

This rare, ancient, and versatile lingam singing bowl comes from Nagaland in North East India, a region known for is diverse tribal groups, deep shamanic and tantric traditions, and some of the last headhunters.  This recently sourced lingam is one of several similar bowls acquired during my recent trip to Nepal, and I very much doubt I will find another.  It is of a rare type associated with shamanic rituals and will appeal to serious practitioners and collectors.

This flat-bottomed shallow bowl is heavy for its size, weighing 1.14 kilos (2 ½ pounds).  It has an excellent grooved lip, and an unusual decorative border of vertical lines set within a pair of bands encircling the outer rim.  The small button lingam at its centre is defined and surrounded by three sets of concentric circles.  There is a small navel underneath.

The fundamental note is an uncommon and interesting third octave E (161Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer, but this antique bowl is also capable of talking and producing splashy fountains when played with a little water inside. 

The structural condition of this ancient hand-beaten bowl is excellent.  It has a nice patina and is free of stains inside and out, but with some small patches of copper oxidization inside.

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a padded striker, and a suede ringer are all included in the price.

This lovely rare lingam bowl is exceptionally versatile and has the look and feel of great antiquity and purpose.
