This is a huge and glorious antique Lingam Singing Bowl with a unique form that I’ve not encountered before. It is quite possibly the largest lingam I have ever seen…with a diameter that is fractionally under 11¾ inches. My feeling is that this is a very early bowl that dates from the 17th or 18th century.
It has a beautiful low and bulbous shape with a wide outward-facing flanged and grooved lip…a feature rarely seen on any bowl form. At its centre there is a medium-size mounded lingam surrounded by a pair of concentric circles, with a second pair of circles some distance away. An incised line encircles the bowl about 1½ inches below the inner rim.
The outer wall narrows a little below the flanged rim, which extends about 1cm beyond the wall. There are two decorative incised lines below the rim and another pair encircling the bowl about a third of the way down. It has a very large navel underneath.
The walls of this lovely bowl are very finely crafted, making it light for its size. Its state of preservation is very good with barely a blemish beyond some light tea-coloured stains in the middle.
The sound quality is very nice indeed…interesting, unusual, rather mellow and with a pronounced pulse. It’s certainly one of the best antique Lingams I’ve encountered in more than 25 years of collecting!
A large padded striker and a heavy suede ringer are included in the price.
