This small/medium antique Lingam Singing Bowl has seen better days. It is structurally sound but there is a small area of surface pitting inside the basin, the lingam has a tiny ding, and its walls are moderately scratched and stained inside and out. It has clearly had a hard life and would probably benefit from a good clean!
However, it’s an interesting bowl despite its cosmetic shortcomings, and its singing voice is good. This is a responsive bowl that readily sings a nice fifth octave D (592Hz) whether struck or played around the rim.
I believe this to be an old bowl, perhaps dating from 18th century. It has unusually thick walls and a flat bottom, and at over ¾ kilo it is heavy for its size. Its thick inward-facing lip (once grooved) is a nice feature. There is a small nipple-like lingam, surrounded by two circles, at its centre, with a tiny navel underneath.
The relatively low price reflects the authentic physical appearance of this rare bowl, not the quality of its sound. A ringer is included.
