This rare antique bowl was described as a ‘Shaman Bowl’ by a trusted Tibetan supplier, although I am unsure if this is because he acquired it from a Shaman or if it is a type of bowl that some Himalayan Shaman use in their work.
It is undoubtedly an uncommon bowl form, and has a wide and shallow shape that would readily lend itself to the layering and mixing of shamanic medicinal preparations, or the presentation of a mandala.
It is quite thick and heavy for its size, and has attractive hammer markings. There is a tiny circle or sun symbol at its centre. The lip is decorated with a geometric pattern, and there is a band of suns (a punched dot inside a circle) encircling the bowl below the rim. A small pinprick inscription overlaying four of the suns appears to have been a later addition, and suggest that this bowl served a ceremonial purpose or at least was important to a former keeper.
The fundamental note is an interesting middle F# (375Hz) that is best produced with a wooden striker. The rim note is multi-harmonic and a little reluctant and slow to build. My feeling is that the rim note of this bowl is secondary to its shamanic function as a sacred vessel.
The condition of this very unusual bowl is excellent. It is clean and free of stains and blemishes. A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a ringer are included in the price.
