This is an extremely rare and beautiful antique Lingam bowl – being exceptionally large and heavy, structurally sound, and in excellent clean condition for its considerable age.  Furthermore it has a fabulous perfect concert pitch voice…a third octave B (247Hz).  It’s hard to imagine a more perfect bowl!

This bowl has a lovely shape with thick curved walls that flair very slightly towards the rim.  It has a very neat and regular pointed lingam at its centre, and a superb navel underneath.  The lip is wide and flat with a decorative groove running down the middle.  A single faint line encircles the bowl below the rim.  A series of old and seemingly random digs around the outer wall below the rim are almost certainly ritual marks.  It’s likely that they once completely encircled the bowl, but some have been worn down with the passage of time and are barely visible in places.

This bowl is so smooth to the touch, inside and out, that it’s hard to imagine that it was originally hammered into shape, and that the surface has been worn smooth through years of handling and use.  It has the most glorious deep golden colour.  A padded striker and a suede-wrapped ringer are included in the price.
