This is a huge and majestic antique Jambati Singing Bowl weighing well over 3 kilos (7 pounds) and with a diameter of 12 ½ inches!  It has an excellent low pulsating second octave G voice (100 Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.

It has a beautiful full-bodied wall, a large smooth inward facing triangulated lip, large concentric circles at its centre, and several incised lines forming a collar below the rim.  Its closely hammered forge markings on the outer wall add surface interest and reflect the light.  It also benefits from a nice inscription below the incised bands on the outer wall…an indication of the bowl’s high status to a previous owner.

This bowl looks and sounds great, and it appears to be structurally sound, but on close inspection there is a fine hairline crack across part of its floor that can also be seen underneath.  It measures about 4cm.  It is an old crack and I am confident that it is stable and extremely unlikely to lengthen.   To my ear it does not appear to have any discernable effect on the sound, which is excellent, but it does impact on the bowl’s value.  If you want a huge, handsome and impressive bowl with a great voice for less than half the normal price…this is it!

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a padded striker, and a teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
