Huge Antique Jambati Singing and Fountain Bowl. E Note (Solar Plexus Chakra)
Weight 4 lb 10 ¾ oz (2.12 kilos). 30 x 13 cm (approx. 12 x 5 inches)
This is a HUGE and handsome antique Jambati Singing Bowl…one of the largest we’ve seen, and a real rarity these days. When struck with a padded mallet it has a fantastically beautiful, almost haunting, low pulsating fundamental…a third octave E flat voice with a long sustain. It sings the same E flat when played around the rim with a heavy suede ringer BUT when played with a hard wooden ringer the rim note becomes a powerful middle B. With a little water inside, this bowl will also produce great fountains.
At well over 2 kilos, nearly 5 pounds, this is a large heavy bowl to hold and play for any length of time, and the ‘weaker sex’ may find it too heavy and tiring to balance on the palm. However, it’s perfectly possible to balance the bowl on a cushion and strike or ring it in situ because it’s weight holds it steadily in place.
The bowl is very well constructed and in good clean condition for its age. It has the classic curved Jambati form and a lovely profile, but a little lower and more curved than usual (a rare form). It has an exceptionally wide and level lip with two micro grooves, some simple decorative banding on the outer wall forming a collar below the rim, and a pair of engraved concentric circles inside the basin. There are some subtle hammer markings on the external walls that catch the light and add surface interest to this handsome antique bowl, which has a bright golden colour. This is a remarkable and impressive Jambati singing bowl by any standard.
