Large 10-inch Himalayan Singing Bowl – Wonderful F#3 Voice!

SOLD

Large Himalayan Ultabati Singing Bowl.  F#3 Note (Heart Chakra)

Weight 4 lb 2 ¾ oz (1.89 Kilos).  25.5 x 14 cm (approx. 10 x 5 ½ inches)

This is a large one-of-a-kind antique Singing Bowl with a truly wonderful voice…a powerful pulsating third octave F# with a long sustain.  It is extremely responsive and easy to play, and sings the same beautiful note whether struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a ringer.

This bowl has a unique caldron-like shape that’s not easy to classify.  It most closely resembles the Himalayan Ultabati in form with its out-turned downward-sloping lip and deep waisted collar, but it has a more bulbous belly and the incised decorative banding is more typical of other bowl types.  It has a grooved lip and there are some large circles at its centre.

I believe this to be an old bowl that dates from the 18th century.  The general condition is very good.  It is structurally sound but the inside of the bowl has some copper oxidization in places, and there is a small cosmetic issue on the flat surface of the lip…a small cross inside a pair of parallel lines, probably made as a means of identification (see bottom left picture).  Fortunately this misses the playing edge and has no impact on the sound.

This old bowl has a majestic presence, a vibrant energy, and the patina, look, and feel of great antiquity.  It also has one of the very best singing voices I have heard!

A Tibetan brocade bowl cushion and a heavy teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
