Antique Jambati Singing Bowl. Notes: Eb3 & Bb4 (Solar Plexus & Crown Chakras)

Weight 1.9 kilos (4 lb 2 oz).  Size 29 x 13 cm (11 ¼ x 5 inches)

This large Jambati Singing Bowl dates from the 18th century and has a lovely third octave Eb3 fundamental (151Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note is the same powerful Eb3 accompanied by Bb4 (468Hz) with a wooden ringer.

It has very fine walls that make it unusually light for its size, and therefore relatively easy to hold and play for an extended period, rather than resting it on a mat or cushion, as is often necessary with larger bowls.

This bowl has seen a lot of use over the years and the grooved rim and circles at its centre have been partially worn away.  However, it remains a lovely old bowl… physically attractive, clean, nice to hold and play, and structurally sound.

There are a number of tiny inclusions (specs of dust or grit) present in the wall that were accidently added to the molten metal; evidence of the primitive conditions under which this ancient bowl was forged.  They add interest, and can be seen in the pictures above.

The boldly incised lines around the outer rim are a particularly nice feature, as is its lovely golden colour.

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, striker, and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
