This is a large and fabulous antique Jambati Singing Bowl of superior quality in an excellent state of preservation.  It has extremely fine hammered walls that make it unusually light for its size and therefore easy to hold and play for an extended period, and to that extent it might be of particular interest to those who struggle to support larger bowls and are denied the direct physical contact enjoyed by handheld playing.

This bowl (circa 1800) has been beautifully forged.  Its finely beaten walls have been further refined by years of service and are now quite smooth to the touch.  It has an excellent (faintly) grooved triangulated lip, concentric circles set widely apart at its centre, and some decorative incised bands below the outer rim…all of which are typical of the Jambati form.

This is a very responsive and easy bowl to play.  The fundamental note is a beautiful third octave Eb with a frequency of 154Hz to 159Hz.  The struck note has a superb sustain and the rim note a gentle pulse.  This bowl will also produce fountains if played around the rim with a little water inside.  A padded striker and a suede ringer are included in the price.
