This antique Lingam bowl has an attractive simplicity of form. It’s a large bowl with a slightly low profile that makes its 8 ½-inch diameter appear wider. It has a large and prominent lingam at its centre and a thickened lip that is boldly defined by a deeply incised line below the rim on the inside (a very uncommon feature). It has a large deep navel on the bottom. There is a single decorative line on the outer wall just below the rim, but this is now quite faint, and any decorative circles that once surrounded the lingam have been rubbed away with the passage of time. This bowl has thick walls that are smooth on the inside, but it still retains some surface interest from hammer markings on the outside, and especially underneath.
The fundamental note is a nice third octave A (217 Hz). The note is the same whether struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note changes to a fifth octave Eb if a wooden ringer is used.
A good quality Lingam bowl that is structurally sound and in clean condition!
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
