Antique Manipuri Singing Bowl. C#3 Note (Root Chakra)
Weight 2 lb 13 oz (1.28 kilos). 24.5 x 9 cm (approx. 9 ¾ x 3 ½ inches)
This is an unusually large a beautiful old singing bowl with the classic shallow Manipuri form. The quality is exceptional with its thick even walls and a superb level lip that has been decorated with sun motifs (a dot within a circle). This motif is also present between a pair of decorative concentric circles at the bowl’s centre. Another pair of incised parallel lines can be found high up on the inside. These may be a purely decorative feature, but may also be water level markers as this is also a fountain bowl. It is capable of producing splashy fountains when played around the rim with water inside.
The fundamental note is a wonderful low third octave C#. The note is the same whether struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.
This is a really lovely old bowl with lots to commend it. It has a wonderful sound. It is has a lovely golden colour and great hammer markings on the outer wall. It is generously decorated and in superb condition throughout.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a large teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
Listen: (2 struck notes and 1 played note)
