This is an unusually large and heavy antique Manipuri Singing Bowl…quite a rarity these days! It has a very nice low third octave C fundamental note that is quite close to concert pitch when the bowl is struck or played around the rim, and multiple harmonics that can be brought to the fore with a little practice or a change of ringer. This bowl will also produce really great splashy fountains, and even has some modest talking ability.
This is a well-crafted good quality bowl with the typically shallow Manipuri form and decoration. It’s an older bowl, probably 19th century, and it has seen a lot of use in its lifetime. It has some nicely incised banding below the rim, but some of the other decorative features are now quite faint. However, this bowl is in excellent structural condition. It has an attractive golden colour and is a delight to look at, hold, and play.
