Large Manipuri Singing Bowls like this are now very hard to come by, and finding one with a rare A note even more so. This bowl not only has a rare middle A fundamental, it is also perfect concert pitch!
The struck note is a third octave Bb (154Hz) with a padded mallet, and also initially when played around the rim with a suede ringer. However, the rim note quickly builds to a rare and beautiful perfect pitch middle A (440Hz). A wooden ringer will directly produce the same middle A.
This early Manipuri, circa 1800, features a decorative circle of sun motifs (punched dot surrounded by a circle) at its centre, and a ring of suns around its lip, although the latter have been worn down over time and only the dots remain. Groups of sacred ritual gashes encircle the bowl at intervals below the outer rim.
This Manipuri is in excellent structural condition, smooth and stain-free, with a light patina of age to its surface.
An interesting and rare bowl with an exceptionally rare voice!
A Tibetan silk brocade cushion and a ringer are included in the price.
