Large Versatile Thadobati Singing Bowl – B3 Close Concert Pitch

This is a large antique Thadobati Singing Bowl with a good third octave B fundamental that is close to concert pitch.  The note is the same whether struck or played around the rim.  This is a versatile bowl that is capable of producing fountains if played with a little water inside, and it also has some talking ability.

This is an older Thadobati singing bowl that dates from the 19^th century, possibly earlier.  It exhibits many of the characteristics associated with early bowls of this type including a decorative band of sun motifs (punched dots within circles) below the outer rim.  There are some boldly incised concentric circles at its centre.

It is an attractive and well-forged bowl of generous weight at just over 1 kilo (2 ¼ lb).  Its deep body and straight high-sided walls and flat bottom are typical of the Thadobati bowl type, and it is in excellent structural condition.  A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
