This is a rare antique globular Lingam Singing Bowl with a sheered lip, a pointed lingam at its centre surrounded by circles, and a deep yoni or navel underneath. There are decorative bands covering its entire outer surface are an interesting and unusual feature.
The fundamental note is a concert pitch third octave E3 (165Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note changes to Bb4 (473Hz) with a wooden ringer. The unique shape of this old bowl results in a sound quality unlike any other. I particularly like the way the sound appears to form inside the bowl…and once it gets going it becomes directional and escapes from its open mouth like a genie in a bottle!
The structural condition of this bowl is excellent. It has a nice aged patina, and is clean and free of stains.
Globular bowls are extremely uncommon, and globular Lingams like this are among the rarest of all bowls.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a small striker, and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are all included in the price.
