Rare Antique Lingam Singing Bowl – Perfect Pitch A3 – Inscribed ’Wise Mother’

SOLD

Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: A3 & E5 (Third Eye & Solar Plexus Chakra)

Weight 1.07 kilos (2 lb 6 oz). Size 19 x 10 cm (7 ½  x 4 inches)

This rare Antique Lingam Singing Bowl has a perfect pitch third octave A3 (219Hz) fundamental when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  When played with a wooden ringer the note sits halfway between Eb5 and E5 (641Hz) and flickers between them.

It is a beautifully crafted superior quality bowl with a curved wall, flat bottom, and grooved lip.  Multiple circles surround the lingam at its centre, and there is a naval or yoni underneath.  There are two bands of tiny dots encircling the outer rim, with two incised decorative bands below.

It carries an inscription below the bands on the outer wall, which is believed to be in a type of old Farsi and translates into ‘Mama-daanaa’ in modern Farsi.  Mama means Mother, and daanaa means Wise….so ‘Wise Mother’.   Very few bowls carry inscriptions, and they are a sign of the high esteem in which they were held by a former keeper.

The shape of this bowl is a little unusual for a Lingam.  It is in excellent structural condition, clean and virtually stain-free, with an aged patina.

A rather special bowl with an excellent voice!

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
