Rare Antique Mani Bowl – Exceptionally Heavy

SOLD

Rare 16th – 18th Century Tibetan Mani Singing Bowl.  G Note (Throat Chakra)
Weight 5 lb 2 ½ oz (2.34 kilos).   20 (rim 18) x 10 cm (approx. 7 x 4 inches)

A very nice example of the rare antique Mani or Charma form of Himalayan singing bowl.  These heavy old bowls are characterized by their flat bottoms, bulbous bellies with thick inward sloping walls, and generous lips.  They have the classic begging-bowl shape, and date from the 16th to 18th century when they ceased to be made.

This is a very handsome, large, and unusually heavy singing bowl with the classic Mani form.  It is well made, with smooth outer walls, a wide, bold, level and grooved lip, and typical Mani decoration in the form of simple engraved bands just below the outer rim, around the belly, and two groups of concentric circles on the inside floor.  This Mani bowl is in good clean condition for its age (200 – 400 years) and virtually free of stains and blemishes.

Mani or Charma bowls are self-amplifying and extremely easy to play, and this one is no exception…singing a powerful fifth octave G note with a strong beat.
