Rare Antique Mani Singing Bowl – F5 Note

SOLD

Rare 16th – 18th Century Tibetan Mani Singing Bowl.  F Note (Heart Chakra)
Weight 2 lb 7 oz (1.10 Kilos).   15.5 x 8.5 cm (approx. 6 ¼ x 3 ¼ inches)

This is good example of a medium size antique Mani or Charma singing bowl.  These heavy old bowls are characterized by their flat bottoms, bulbous bellies with thick inward sloping walls, and generous lips.  They have the classic begging-bowl shape, and date from the 16th to 18th century when they ceased to be made.

This medium size bowl has the typical Mani form.  It is well made, with smooth outer walls, a wide, bold, level lip, and typical Mani decoration in the form of simple engraved bands just below the outer rim, around the belly, and concentric circles on the inside floor.  This Mani bowl is in good clean condition for its age (200 – 400 years).

Mani or Charma bowls are self-amplifying and extremely easy to play.  This one sings a lovely fifth octave F note whether struck with a mallet or played around the rim with a wooden ringer.
