Rare Antique Mani Singing Bowl – Medium Size

SOLD

Rare 16th – 18th Century Tibetan Mani Singing Bowl.  C Note (Root Chakra)
Weight 2 lb 3 ¼ oz (997g).   16.5 (rim 15.5) x 8.5cm (approx. 6 x 3 ¼ inches)

A nice example of an antique Mani or Charma singing bowl.  These heavy old bowls are characterized by their flat bottoms, bulbous bellies with thick inward sloping walls, and generous lips.  They have the classic begging-bowl shape, and date from the 16th to 18th century when they ceased to be made.

This medium size bowl has the typical Mani form.  It is well made, with smooth outer walls, a wide, bold, level and grooved lip, and typical Mani decoration in the form of simple engraved bands just below the outer rim, around the belly, and two groups of bold concentric circles on the inside floor.  This Mani bowl is in good clean condition for its age (200 – 400 years) and virtually free of stains and blemishes.

Mani or Charma bowls are self-amplifying and extremely easy to play.  This one sings a lovely fifth octave C sharp whether struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a wooden ringer.
