Rare C4 Antique Remuna-Lingam Singing Bowl – Inscription
SOLD
Antique Remuna Singing Bowl. Notes: C4 & F#5 (Root & Heart Chakras)
Weight: 875 grams (1 lb 15 oz). Size: 16.5 x 9 cm (6 ½ x 3 ½ inches)
This is a rare 19th Century Remuna-Lingam Singing Bowl with two great voices…a middle octave C4 (265Hz) fundamental when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note changes to a fifth octave F#5 (747Hz) with a wooden ringer.
Lingam bowls have a very distinctive sound, and Remuna bowls are renowned for their beautiful voices and ease of play. This lovely bowl is very responsive and combines the best of both worlds. It is believed to date from the 19th Century but could be older.
This unusual Lingam Singing Bowl has the body and sonic characteristics of a Remuna bowl. It has the classic Remuna form with its fine slightly globular wall, sheered lip, and decorative bands around the rim…but with the rare addition of a lingam surrounded by circles at its centre, and a matching navel or yoni underneath.
It is very old and has been handled and washed countless times, to the point where its exterior wall has been worn smooth and some of its decorative fearturs are fairly faint, including a dot-punched inscription, which is believed to be a female’s name in Nepali. Inscriptions are a sign of the high esteem in which a bowl was held by a former keeper.
It is structurally sound, clean and virtually stain-free, with an attractive aged patina.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a ringer are included in the price.
