Antique bell-shaped bowls have a distinctive voice and are very uncommon, with perhaps one in several thousand possessing this form. Antique Lingam bowls are even more rare and also have a distinctive sound…so finding a bowl that combines the bell form with a lingam is really special indeed. This is a particularly lovely bowl that also benefits from a small inscription; a sure sign of the high esteem in which a former keeper held it.
The fundamental note is a nice third octave F3 (172Hz) when struck with a padded mallet that becomes concert pitch (174Hz) when played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note changes to a middle B4 (485Hz) with a wooden ringer. It is very responsive bowl and readily sings.
This old bowl shows signs of long use and probably dates from the 19thcentury. Its finely beaten high-sided wall is subtly flared towards the top. It has a plain sheered rim, and some faint decorative lines encircling the outer wall. There is a neat pointed navel at the centre surrounded by two pairs of concentric circles placed some distance apart, and a matching navel or yoni underneath.
The structural condition of this antique bowl is excellent, clean and stain-free, with an interesting golden bronze surface and the look and feel of antiquity.
A really lovely example of this very rare bowl form, and highly collectable!
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
