This unusually large ornate Phurba dates from the 19th century and is of a type favoured by Himalayan Shaman for healing and energetic work.

 

 

Superbly carved in rosewood it features the 4 faces of a deity wearing a huge ornate dorje-like crown with an iron chain and blade or sickle attached. A small strip of cotton cloth is believed to have been torn from a client’s clothing during a healing ritual.

 

It has an intricately carved dorje hilt and a makara decorated with celestial bodies, below which is a three-sided blade with entwined Nagas.   The tip of the blade has been wrapped in metal to protect the wood when the phurba is thrust into the ground.
