Rare Mani C Bowl – Superb Condition and Powerful Voice

This is a very nice example of a rare antique Mani or Charma form of Himalayan singing bowl. These heavy old bowls are characterized by their flat bottoms, bulbous bellies with thick inward sloping walls, and generous lips. They have the classic begging-bowl shape, and date from the 16th to 18th century when they ceased to be made. Mani or Charma bowls are self-amplifying and extremely easy to play, and this one is no exception.
This is a very substantial and heavy Mani bowl of considerable character and age. It has one of the most powerful voices we’ve come across…a penetrating and pulsating fifth octave C with sufficient volume to fill an arena. Some Mani bowls can be a little slow to get going but this one is very responsive and extremely easy to play.
It has the typical bulbous Mani shape and decorative features, including a grooved and inward-facing lip and boldly defined bands around the rim and belly, as well as concentric circles on the inside floor. The bowl is in very good condition for its great age; clean and virtually free of blemishes and stains. A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.
