Rare Mani Singing Bowl – Powerful Concert Pitch Voice

SOLD

Rare 16th – 18th Century Tibetan Mani Singing Bowl.  F Note (Heart Chakra)
Weight 3 lb 11 ¼ oz (1.68 kilos).   18 x 10 cm (approx. 7 x 4 inches)

This is a good example of an antique Mani or Charma singing bowl.  These heavy old bowls are characterized by their flat bottoms, bulbous bellies with thick inward sloping walls, and generous lips.  They have the classic begging-bowl shape, and date from the 16th to 18th century when they ceased to be made.

This large and heavy singing bowl has the typical Mani form.  It is well made, with smooth outer walls, a wide level and (now faintly) grooved lip, and the usual Mani decoration in the form of simple engraved bands just below the outer rim and several concentric circles on the inside floor.  This Mani bowl is in good clean condition for its age (200 – 400 years) with particularly nice smooth walls, and is largely free of blemishes.

Mani or Charma bowls are self-amplifying and extremely easy to play.  This one has a particularly powerful and lovely fifth octave F sharp whether struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a wooden ringer.  As the sound builds to peak volume the note becomes an excellent concert pitch!

A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.
