Rare Multi-Harmonic Highly Decorated Antique Divination/Singing/Offering Bowl

SOLD

Rare Antique Divination/Singing/Offering Bowl. Notes: D3/G4/F#5

Weight: 1 lb 10 oz (732 grams).   Size: 20 x 6 cm (8 x 2 ¼ inches)

This highly unusual antique shallow bowl is difficult to categorize because its function is unclear.  It could simply be a multi-harmonic singing bowl with a perfect pitch D3 fundamental (147Hz), but its shallow form and detailed decoration inside and out suggests that it might have been a shamans divination or temple offering Bowl.

Both inner and outer surfaces of this bowl are highly decorated with a variety of patterns and motifs, some of which are very complex and difficult to fathom, while others are clear representations of a lotus (inside centre) and dorje (outside centre).

The fundamental note is a perfect pitch third octave D3 (147Hz) when struck with a padded mallet.  The rim note is a middle G4 (398Hz) when played with a suede ringer, and a fifth octave F#5 (738Hz) with a wooden one, but other harmonics are also present.

This bowl has fine walls, a sheered lip, and an unusual mound at its centre with a matching depression underneath.  It is structurally sound and basically clean. Virtually all of the extensive artwork is intact, although an area underneath, where it makes contact with the hand, has been worn down over the years.

A very unusual and interesting singing bowl!

A ringer is included in the price.
