19th Century Bronze Elephant Claw Bell
Size: 11 x 8.5 cm (4 ¼ x 3 ½ inches), Weight: 972 grams (2 lb 2 ¼ oz)
This is a fabulous and rare bronze Elephant Claw Bell, most probably made in Uttar Pradesh, India, in the 19th century. It would have been hung from an elephant as a warning to pedestrians in narrow crowded streets.
This particularly fine example is from my own private bell collection. It has a large iron clapper inside and is in perfect condition, with a nicely aged patina. Mostly you will see modern lightweight brass ones, but this is heavy antique bronze and special.
It’s an interesting piece that will appeal to bell collectors and musicians. It would also make an unusual paper weight. I bought it myself simply because it was such a nice object.
