Antique Engraved Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: D4 & G#5 (Sacral & Throat Chakras)
Weight: 839 grams (1 lb 14 oz). Size: 18 x 9.5 cm (7 x 3 ¾ inches)
Hand engraved antique singing bowls are extremely hard to come by. They are usually genuine 18th and 19th century antique bowls from India that are later exquisitely carved to order in Bangladesh by just a few specialist master craftsmen. It can take a skilled craftsman a month or more to engrave a single bowl, depending upon its size and the complexity of design. And because the carving is usually commissioned they rarely come onto the market. Lingam bowls are seldom carved. This beautiful bowl is one of very few engraved antique Lingams in my collection.
The fundamental struck note is a fabulous spot-on perfect pitch middle octave D4 (294Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note changes to a fifth octave G#5 (847Hz) with a wooden ringer. It is a responsive bowl and easy to play.
This is a rare superior quality and perfectly proportioned high-wall Lingam with a diameter of 7 inches. It has a relatively thick (originally grooved) lip and a slightly rounded bottom. At its centre there is beautiful lingam surrounded and defined by two sets of circles, matched by a deep navel or yoni underneath.
The fabulous carving covers the whole of the outer wall and features a border around the rim and repeating pattern of flowers and foliage, probably based on a traditional carpet design.
It is in excellent structural condition, clean and free of stains and blemishes, and has a fabulous antique bronze patina and colour.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
