This large and extraordinary antique bowl is one for the serious collector…or anyone with a deep pocket and wanting something really different. Its unique form generates a sound unlike any other bowl I have come across in 30 years of collecting…a glorious and pulsating third octave F that wavers between 175Hz (concert pitch) and 179Hz. It’s a lovely sound, and quite loud too. The struck and played notes are the same.
There are some boldly incised concentric circles at its centre, and a pair of decorative lines encircling the inner rim. It has an unusual downward sloping lip and a pair of decorative lines just above the hip. this bowl also benefits from a very nice engraved inscription on the outer wall…a fair indication of the high regard in which it was held by a former keeper.
This wonderful bowl is believed to date from the 18th century. It is in excellent structural condition and has the look of great antiquity coupled with a real feeling of power and purpose. It is such an unusual bowl that I can’t help thinking that it must have had some specific ceremonial function within a temple or community.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a padded striker and a ringer are all included in the price.
