Unusual ‘Genie’ Antique Singing Bowl – G4 Note & Inscription
SOLD
Unusual Antique Singing Bowl. G4 Note (Throat Chakra)
Weight 1 lb 7 ¾ oz. (672g). 18.5 x 11 cm (approx. 7 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches)
This extraordinary antique singing bowl has a unique voice and also benefits from a long inscription that is set within a pair of drawn (dot-punched) fishes.
The fundamental struck note is a very interesting mid octave G that is close to concert pitch when a hard suede-covered striker is used. The rim note is the same G4 when played with a suede or wooden ringer, but the note develops into a powerful and high sixth octave C when the latter is used.
This unusual bowl with its rare form is in excellent condition for its age; it has an attractive golden colour and is virtually free of stains and blemishes. It sits comfortably in the hand and is easy to play.
Decoration is limited to a few circles at its centre, a fine line along its lip, and several incised lines forming a (now faint) collar just below the outer rim.
The unique shape of this old bowl results in a sound quality unlike any other. I particularly like the way the sound appears to form inside the bowl…and once it gets going it becomes directional and escapes from its open mouth like a genie in a bottle!
A double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
