Antique Lingam Singing Bowl.   C#4/D4 (Root/Sacral Chakras)

Weight 1 lb 15½ oz. (894 grams).   Size 18 x 8 cm (7 x 3¼ inches)

This is a very pretty medium size 19th century Lingam Singing Bowl in excellent, clean and stain-free condition.

It has been beautifully forged with lots of attention given to detail and surface finish.  It has a lovely shape with a wall that gently curves inwards towards the rim.  The inside is golden and smooth, while the outer surface has both smooth and hammered areas either side of a pair of incised lines that encircle the bowl a little above the mid-point.

It has a grooved lip, and two rows of decorative punched dots below the rim.  There is a neat pointed lingam at its centre, surrounded by a series of well-defined decorative concentric circles, and underneath it has a small flat bottom with a neat navel in the middle.

This perfectly pretty Lingam bowl has a small imperfection…some surface crackle around the point of the lingam (see picture).

It might have taken a knock at some time, but it appears to be intact and has no noticeable effect on the sound quality, which is excellent. However, this imperfection is reflected in the price of this otherwise lovely antique bowl.

The sound of this Lingam is very interesting and its frequency unusual.  This is because its pitch (285Hz) is exactly midway between a forth octave C# and a forth octave D.

The note is the same whether struck or played around the rim with a suede or wooden ringer.  This is a responsive bowl, and therefore easy to play.  It has a very attractive golden bronze colour.  A double-ended teak and suede ringer is included in the price.
