Wonderful Rare Superior Quality 18th Century Lingam Singing Bowl – Perfection!

This stunningly beautiful and rare Antique Lingam Singing Bowl has a wonderful voice and is all one could ask of a bowl!  It has been superbly crafted with graceful even walls and a level rim.  At its centre there is a fabulous pointed lingam surrounded and defined by 2 sets of circles, with a matching navel or yoni beneath.

Great attention has been paid to the aesthetic aspects of this bowl.  It has harmonious proportions with just the right balance between thickness and weight, and the top of  its outer wall has been polished smooth to form a subtle decorative collar that contrasts with the more textured surface below.

The fundamental note is a fabulous third octave G#3 (206Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a fifth octave D5 (584/5Hz) with a wooden ringer.  Both notes are close to perfect concert pitch.  It is very responsive and easy to play.

This ancient bowl has been well used, and some of the dotted artwork encircling the rim has been worn down with the passage of time, as have some of the interesting and numerous magical or ritual gashes that encircle the bowl’s exterior.

This bowl is in perfect structural condition, clean inside and out, save for a few subtle stains inside resulting from its occasional use as a bird perch!  There is also a small and barely visible hairline crack low down on the wall, that almost certainly occurred, and was repaired, during its manufacture.  Indeed I had trouble finding it a second time, and mention it only to be thorough in my description.  It is perfectly stable, of no consequence, and has no impact on the sound quality.

A wonderful ancient treasure that feels special, and a personal favourite…sheer perfection!  If I were not downsizing my collection I would buy this bowl again without a moment’s hesitation.
