Antique Ultabati bowls are now extremely rare and difficult to source, even more so for large examples. This particular bowl is exceptional in every respect…age, size, shape, quality, condition and musicality…and ranks among the very best in my collection spanning 45 years.
This huge and stunningly beautiful Golden Ultabati Singing Bowl has an incredible voice…a low second octave perfect pitch Eb2 (78Hz) when stuck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note evolves into a lovely middle octave A4 (430Hz) if desired. The purity of sound is second to none. It has a long sustain and is extremely responsive and easy to play.
It has masses of vibrant energy and will readily make the sacred OM sound with a heavy suede ringer. The rim note changes to a third octave A3 (214Hz) with a wooden ringer.
This Ultabati has a massive diameter of 12 ¾ inches, and its lower than usual profile makes it appear even wider. It has a gracefully curved wall, a typical outward-sloping rim, and a rounded bottom. The outer wall is smooth and shiny above the shoulder, and contrasts with the subtle hammer marks below. Their separate boundaries are further defined by a pair of parallel lines. There are two sets of circles at its centre.
This bowl is thought to date from the 19th century. It is in exceptional condition, clean and stain-free with the exception of some faint bird guano splattering inside. It has a fabulous golden bronze colour and is extremely aesthetically and sonically beautiful.
It is likely that this glorious superior quality bowl served an important ceremonial purpose and was commissioned by or for a Temple or Monastery.
