Majestic 12 ¾“ Antique Temple Jambati Singing Bowl – Low F2 Multi-Harmonic

This fabulous huge bowl is as near to perfection as one could wish for in an antique Jambati.  Bordering on the largest of its type at 12 ¾ inches, and in an excellent blemish-free state of preservation, it has a beautiful low F2 fundamental with multiple harmonics.   Furthermore, its superior quality, finely hammered walls, and lovely golden bronze colour contribute considerably to its aesthetic appeal.  

Weighing 2.83 kilos (6 lb 4 oz) it is relatively light for its size.  It has a gracefully curved deep-bodied wall, a plain sheered lip, and a rounded bottom.  There are decorative bands encircling the outer rim, and circles at its centre.

Its physical beauty is matched by a superb low second octave F2 fundamental (85Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a heavy suede ringer.  With a little practice this same ringer will produce the vibrant OM sound favored by Buddhists and others.  When played around the rim with a lighter suede ringer the note flickers between B3 (253Hz) and C4 (257Hz), and when played with a wooden ringer the rim note changes to a perfect pitch B4 (494Hz).  It’s a very responsive bowl, easy to play, and has a long sustain.

This impressive Jambati Singing Bowl is thought to date from the 19th century and is quite likely to have served an important ceremonial purpose and may have been commissioned by or for a temple or monastery, but in later years it could have been used for the storage of grain; this accounting for its exceptional condition.

Antique Jambati Singing Bowls approaching anything like this size are extremely rare and sought after for their beautiful low resonant notes, loud voices and long sustains.  This one is as good as they come!
