Engraved Antique Jambati-Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes B2/F#4 & B3 (Crown & Heart Chakras)

Weight 3.02 kilos (6 lb 11 oz).   Size 31.5 x 13 cm (12 ½  x 5 ¼ inches)

This wonderful Antique Jambati-Lingam Singing Bowl is simply unique – a one-off treasure the likes of which you will not see again anywhere in the world!

What makes it special is its huge size for a Lingam bowl, its superb perfect pitch voice, its fantastic condition, and the fact that virtually the entire outer wall has been intricately engraved with beautiful artwork.

The fundamental struck note is a wonderful perfect pitch middle octave F#4 (369.5Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The struck note is accompanied in the background by another perfect pitch harmonic…a beautiful low second octave B2 (123Hz).  Sometimes the B2 dominates, and sometimes it’s the F#4.   A third octave B3 (243Hz) harmonic is also present.  The struck note has a fabulous pulsating long sustain.

This bowl was sourced in the Indian Himalayas and dates from the 19th century, possibly earlier.  Its superior quality, size, and weight strongly suggests that it was a very important ceremonial bowl that was probably commissioned by or for a temple.

It was later intricately hand-engraved by a master Bangladeshi craftsman, probably sometime in the early 20th century.  This incredible artwork would have taken months to complete, and will have added considerably to the bowl’s cost and value, and more importantly, its status as an important ceremonial or temple bowl.  One can hardly imagine a more impressive centerpiece of any sacred ritual!

As previously mentioned, this is an exceptionally large and heavy antique Lingam bowl.  All Lingams are extremely rare and difficult to source, and typically range from 5 to 8 inches in diameter…9 inches or more being virtually unknown.   So you will appreciate how extraordinary and special this bowl is with its diameter of 12 ½ inches!

When viewed from the side it looks like a very large Jambati bowl with its gracefully curved wall, triangulated lip, and rounded bottom.  However, at its centre there is beautiful lingam surrounded and defined by two sets of circles, matched by a deep navel or yoni underneath.

The carved artwork features a band of alternating garland-like motifs and a floral design encircling the middle of the outer wall, surrounded by foliage and flowers.  Below this there are six beautifully carved facing pairs of reclining deer, twelve in all.  The engraved motifs are unique to Bangladesh and are thought to be derived from tradition paintings and carpets.

It is in excellent structural condition, clean and free of stains and blemishes, with a beautiful aged patina and colour.

The price of this bowl reflects its incomparable beauty and uniqueness in the world!  It is extremely hard to part with.

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, padded striker, and a ringer are included.
