Set of 2 Antique Bangladeshi Carved Jambati Bowls
Bowl 1. Weight 3.59 kilos (7 lb 15 oz).   Size 33.5 x 13.5 cm (13 ¼ x 5 ¼ inches)
Bowl 2. Weight 1.12 kilos (2 lb 7 oz). Size 23.5 x 12 (9 ¼ x 3 ¾ inches)

This fabulous pair of antique engraved Jambati Singing Bowls were found together in Bangladesh.  Although vastly different in size they are stylistically similar, have some of the same floral motifs, and were undoubtedly carved long ago by the same Bangladeshi craftsman or craft family.  The quality of the carving is consistently superb in both bowls, and although their motifs are similar there are subtle differences that makes each a unique work of art.

Massive 13 ¼ “ Bangladeshi Hand-Carved Antique Jambati Singing Bowl – G2 & PP D4
Weight 3.59 kilos (7 lb 15 oz).   Size 33.5 x 13.5 cm (13 ¼ x 5 ¼ inches)

This spectacular and massive hand-engraved antique Bangladeshi Jambati Singing Bowl has virtually its entire outer wall intricately engraved with beautiful artwork.   It also has one of the finest low voices and long pulsating sustains I have encountered.

The stunning artwork features a flowering plant inside 23 medallions all surrounded by a beautifully carved floral motif based on a traditional carpet design.  A decorative carved border encircles the outer rim with another band at the bottom of the wall.

The fundamental struck note is a fabulous low second octave G2 (96Hz) with a long pulsating sustain when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note will readily develop into a perfect pitch middle octave D4 (293Hz) if desired.  The rim note changes to a fifth octave D5 (581Hz) if played with a wooden ringer.

It has a gracefully curved wall, a triangulated lip, and rounded bottom.  The circles at its centre have been worn away with the passage of time.  It is in excellent structural condition, clean and free of stains and blemishes, with an aged bronze colour.

This really large and heavy antique bowl is best placed on a cushion for playing.  Its size and quality suggests that it probably served a sacred or ceremonial purpose and was commissioned by or for a temple or monastery.

A large Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, padded striker, and 2 ringers are included in the price of £5,550

Superb 9 ¼ “ Bangladeshi Hand-Carved Antique Jambati Singing Bowl – PP B2 & F#4
Weight 1.12 kilos (2 lb 7 oz).   Size 23.5 x 12 cm (9 ¼ x 4 ¾ inches)

This beautiful hand-engraved antique Bangladeshi Jambati Singing Bowl has virtually its entire outer wall intricately engraved with beautiful artwork.

The stunning artwork features a flowering plant inside 16 medallions all surrounded by a beautifully carved floral motif based on a traditional carpet design.  A decorative carved border encircles the outer rim with another band at the bottom of the wall.

The fundamental struck note is a fabulous perfect pitch low second octave B2 (123Hz) with a long sustain when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note will readily develop into a nice middle octave F#4 (375Hz) harmonic if desired.  The rim note changes (378Hz) with a wooden ringer.

It has a gracefully curved wall, a fine triangulated lip, and rounded bottom.  The interior is wonderfully smooth with faint circles at its centre.  It is in excellent structural condition, clean and free of stains and blemishes, with an aged bronze colour.

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, padded striker, and a ringer are included in the price of £1,650

It is extraordinarily rare to find two related bowls so I am offering them for sale here as a set of 2 at a reduced price, but I am willing to sell them separately if desired.  The price listed here is for both bowls. Please message me if you wish to buy one or the other.

Hand engraved antique singing bowls are extremely hard to come by.  They are usually genuine 18th and 19th century antique bowls from India that are later exquisitely carved to order in Bangladesh by just a few specialist master craftsmen.  Usually only large superior quality high-value Jambati bowls are engraved because the process is lengthy and expensive.  It can take a skilled craftsman a month or more to engrave a single bowl, depending upon its size and the complexity of design.  And because the carving is usually commissioned they rarely come on the market.   The engraved artwork adds considerably to the bowl’s cost and value, and more importantly, its status as an important ceremonial or temple bowl.  This beautiful bowl is one of very few engraved antique Jambati in my collection.  Click here for more information about carved bowls.
