Wonderful 11 ½“ Bangladeshi Carved Antique Jambati Singing Bowl – Perfect Pitch F2 & OM

This superb large 11 ½” antique Bangladeshi carved Jambati Singing Bowl has virtually its entire outer wall intricately engraved with flowers and foliage based on a traditional carpet design.  The carving is of the finest quality, with countless small motifs packed tightly together, and decorative borders top and bottom.

The fundamental note is a low perfect pitch second octave F2 (88Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a middle C4 (266Hz) with a wooden ringer.  It has masses of vibrant energy and is capable of producing the sacred OM sound.  It is a responsive bowl and easy to play.

This large bowl has unusually fine walls, especially considering that they have been finely carved, making it relatively light for hand-held playing.  It has a high-sided curved wall, a slightly triangulated sheered lip, and a rounded bottom.  There are circles at its centre.  It is in excellent structural condition, clean and free of stains and blemishes, with an dark bronze colour.

The size and exceptional quality of this antique bowl suggests that it might have been commissioned by or for a temple or monastery.

Hand engraved antique singing bowls are extremely hard to come by.  They are usually genuine 18th and 19th century antique bowls from India that are later exquisitely carved in Bangladesh by just a few specialist master craftsmen.  Usually only large superior quality high-value Jambati bowls are engraved because the process is lengthy and expensive.  It can take a skilled craftsman a month or more to engrave a single bowl, depending upon its size and the complexity of design.  And because the carving is usually commissioned they rarely become available.  This beautiful bowl is one of very few engraved antique Jambati in my collection.  Click here for more information about carved bowls.
