Antique Manipuri Singing Bowl – Perfect Pitch Bb3

This Antique Manipuri Singing Bowl features a lot of artwork, although some of it has been worn down with the passage of time.  There is a circle of suns (dots surrounded by circles) at its centre, and all along the rim.  Only the dots at the centre remain today.  There are also some parallel lines encircling the inner wall below the rim.

The outer wall features more suns, mostly intact, and a band of ritual gashes which are thought to have been made as part of the bowl’s initiation rite.  Artwork like this is only found on superior quality older bowls.

Like most Manipuri, this bowl is best played with a wooden ringer.  The fundamental note is a perfect pitch third octave Bb3 (233Hz)  when struck, and Eb3 (1260Hz) when played around the rim.

This attractive old bowl is in excellent structural condition, with a clean golden interior and some very light copper oxidization outside.
