Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: B3, B4, C4 and F5
Weight 595 grams (1 lb 5 oz). Size 16. x 8 cm (6 ¼ x 3 inches)
This rare fine quality medium-size Lingam Singing Bowl is believed to date from the 18th Century but could be older. Astonishingly, I have been unable to identify its fundamental struck note with any degree of certainty because each strike with a padded mallet produces an entirely different note, or the same note in a different octave.
The struck notes are variously (and in no particular order) B3 (253Hz), B4 (506Hz), C4 (254Hz) and F5 (715Hz). When played around the rim with a suede ringer the note is B3 (253Hz), while a wooden ringer produces F5 (717Hz).
This lovely bowl has beautifully crafted curved even walls, a plain sheered lip, and rounded bottom. The lingam at its centre is surrounded and defined by circles, and there is a matching navel or yoni underneath. Any exterior decorative artwork that it might have had has disappeared with the passage of time, leaving the hammered surface silky smooth.
It is in excellent structural condition, clean, free of all but the faintest of stains, and with an attractive aged patina. It is aesthetically beautiful, with the look and feel of great antiquity.
A rare and exceptional multi-harmonic antique Lingam Singing Bowl!
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
