Exquisite Rare 19th Century Lingam Singing & Talking Bowl A3/G#3
£1,100.00
Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: A3/G3 & Eb5 (Third Eye, Throat & Solar Plexus Chakras)
Weight 1.13 kilos (2 lb 8 oz). Size 20 x 9.5 cm (8 x 3 ¾ inches)
This rare superior quality Lingam Singing Bowl dates from the 19th century. The dominant fundamental is a third octave A3 (217Hz) that flickers to a third octave G#3 (211Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note changes to a perfect pitch fifth octave Eb5 (622Hz) harmonic with a wooden ringer.
It is also capable of producing a variety of sounds when struck and rocked back and forth with a little water inside.
This lingam bowl has beautifully crafted curved even walls, a faintly grooved lip, and rounded bottom. The large lingam at its centre is surrounded and defined by circles, and there is a matching navel or yoni underneath. Two decorative parallel bands of tiny dots encircle the outer rim, and there are decorative lines at intervals around the wall. However, they are now quite faint, having been worn down with the passage of time.
A sprinkling of inclusions on the bottom add interest. Inclusions are small specs of dust or grit that have accidentally been included in the molten alloy during the forging process. They manifest as tiny pimples on its surface, and are evidence of the primitive conditions in which this bowl was made.
It is quite large for a lingam bowl, heavy for its size, and beautifully proportioned. It is in excellent structural condition, clean and free of stains and blemishes, and with an attractive aged patina.
It is aesthetically beautiful, with the look and feel of great antiquity. A superb example of this rare bowl type!
A double-ended teak and suede ringer is included in the price.
